. john alston continues live in downtown napa. we have been watching the river for days, how does it look tonight? >> reporter: it's fine right now after a day of rain it's stopped for the time being. behind me is a bloated napa river but well within the banks. this area is very saturated. the storm has brought some flooding in wine country. water overtopped a levee along sonoma creek where it borders the larsen family winery and this year the creek has been especially high. water is continuing to flood into a portion of the 70 acres of chardonay vines. vineyard looks more like a like in some areas. this is both good and bad. >> its nuisance but not a bad. it's good for the ground and agriculture and recharge our groundwater. it's a pain, you can see there are trees and logs and basketballs and whatever comes down the creek is what we get. >> reporter: he says it cost about $10,000 over year to remove all of that junk once the rainy season ends. they plan to rebuild the levee but that temporary solution when the air goes into flood. we're having a break in the weather but residents are ge

and napa county. highway 121 and highway 12 floods after a heavy rain and then becomes a river when the high tide occurs and pours more water into the area. the road will be closed until sometime on wednesday. the rain was heavy throughout the bay area. the streets became flooded after 5:00 p.m. umbrellas were a necessary part of any wardrobe on this christmas day. the rain poured down on richmond and mcdonald avenue slowing traffic. the frontage roads were partially covered. few drivers slowed down. roads were filled with people returning from spending the holidays with family and friends. they were very busy due to twice the usual accidents. cedric emerson is ready for dry weather. >> i am actually from the bay area, so i am used to it. it is definitely rough when you drive out there on the freeways. >> are you happy to see the rain go? >> yes, i am. i am ready to get this nice weather back. >> water was the reason for the closure. but the rain was not the culprit. a watermain burst beneath the roadway. it closed because they feared the leakage could cause the roadway to collapse.

closures and now concerns that a levy could break. and flood warnings on the napa river and a major intersection closed. good evening. thank you so much for joining us. i'm ama dates. we have live team coverage of our storm wach. lilian kim is on the peninsula where a creek over ran its banks. and there was lots of flooding in the north bay where cornell bernard is. we start with leigh glaser. leigh? >> what a difference about six, eight hours makes. live doppler 7hd, very active earlier this morning beginning at 7:00 a.m. as the cold front moved through. now you could barely even tell we had any rain at all. we are looking live now, folks, and you can see the receive rain has pushed on to the south and east of the bay area. still getting a few little sprinkles here and there between morgan hill and hollister. mainly at the higher elevations, but most of the rain, or actually all of the rain has moved out of the area. we did have quite a bit of rainfall. we still have a couple of river watches. these are river watches in affect until tomorrow morning. the river right now is at 27 fe

bernard is live in napa. a dramatic water rescue on napa river. >> much of wine country is still drying out after the storm, but the napa river as you can see here is still high, swollen with rain. we arrived moments after a man wound up in the river right underneath the third street bridge. >> a man flailing, fighting to stay afloat in the middle of the napa river. crowds on the bank watched the drama unfold. >> they were there really quick. >> we needed to get him out real quick. we got a good throw on the rope. >> the victim was pulled ashore. a ladder was brought in and the man was pulled to safety. there was no time to waste. in sonoma county, high water is still a big issue. intersection of 12 and 121 was underwater when sonoma creek overflowed its banks. today the water is still spilling into nearby vineyards. >> it looks like the ocean is out there right now. only nice thing is all the vines are dormant so there is no harm. >> dozens of roads are still flooded. george lives near sonoma creek and he is frustrated. >> every year there is more water in the creek and less creek to c

tomorrow morning below flood stage at 30 feet. the napa river in napa 23 feet right now. you can see the flood stage is 25 feet. it crested earlier today at 26 feet. it is just a foot above flood stage. it is now receding. i think the flood watch for that part of the napa river will be lifted in the next couple hours. how much rainfall? we take a look at that coming up. >> thank you. >>> hundreds of people living on the peninsula abandoned their homes after the creek started flooding the area. the new concern tonight is whether the levies will hold. lilian kim is live in palo alto with the latest. lilian? >> reporter: ama, the waters have receiptedded a bit, but it is still flowing and the levies have started to weaken. they detected three boils in levies close to homes. the creek first over ran its banks near woodland and university avenues, right in front of the 4 seasons hotel in palo alto. many took a risk and drove through the intersection before police shut it down. water from the rising creek hit 101 next. this is what it looked like on the northbound lanes just before the uni

valleys of the north bay and east bay where low temperatures will drop into the 30s up at napa. santa rosa and fairfield and livermore and concord. low 40s more for most other parts. here at frontal system bringing our next bout of stormy weather. we'll start our forecast animation, 7:00 at which point it will be cloudy and no rain has expected to arrive. but by 11:00 tomorrow morning, rain developing in northern sonoma county pushing down santa rosa. then steadier rain around the north bay, beginning to push south of golden gate and by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, widespread rainfall across most of bay area with moderate to heavy rain in many areas. showers will trail into wednesday. by 7:00 wednesday evening we'll be looking at mainly dry conditions but we will have received quite a bit of rainfall by then. totals up to 2 inches in the north bay mountains. inch and a half in the north bay. 1.2 inches in the east bay. half in peninsula and two inches in santa cruz mountains. over in the sierra, winter storm watch is in effect, four to eight inches above 4,000 feet. back here in the bay area,

and creeks are within their banks a gang. if the napa river has peaked and is beginning to recede. the current level is 9.4 ft., while flood stage is at 16 ft. so we are much below that. the flood warning for the napa river has been cancelled. >> we do have locally dense fog for portions of the north bay. we have said improvements for novato. it is clear conditions for the heart of the bay area. the visibility is down for those a you driving in the livermore area. we will see an increase in cloud cover to rob the day. this will arrive on christmas day the next storm. as you look out the window you will see that there are rain drops in santa rosa. it will continue to spread its way south. it will stretch all the way down to san francisco. it will remain dry for the south bay but rain will pick up in intensity as we head into 4:00 p.m. on christmas day. >> the bottom half of the bay area should remain dry. the heaviest showers will not pass through to a letter on the day. your christmas forecast shows that the north bay will have rain in the morning and their morning lows will be in
